About Woody Mo

I treat music as a way to make narratives with sound. I explore the possibilities of every musical instrument’s acoustics, to render innovative sounds or colorful tunes. I use different combinations of instruments, often having both orthodox ways of playing but also extended techniques for sounding, to illustrate images with vivid and lavish spectrum. I hold the same approaches as I process electroacoustic works or fixed media projects. I believe in the emotions carried by each different genre of music, and I believe those varieties of emotions could not only coexist with a carefully constructed structure but enhance the narrative of music.

In my compositions, juxtaposition, layering, and astatic contrast are key to framing a logical structure. My arrangements are often completed in a way that is easily understood by audiences of all backgrounds, with contemporary musical languages that are often sophisticatedly designed.

As a Chinese Composer, I’m heavily influenced by the traditional Chinese music. I use traditional techniques of instrument playing on non-Chinese instruments, or use traditional instruments to portray a contemporary sound, or use the structural logic, the concept of rhythm, and the philosophy of music writing from traditional Chinese music to explore all kinds of undiscovered soundscapes.

I collaborated with all kinds of artists to create different multimedia works by using time and sound to render spaces and emotions. I look forward to the future of my journey as I will keep finding new possibilities in an underdiscovered world of sound.
